ATLANTA (AP) — Holiday weekend air travelers are hoping that the getaway is a good omen for homecoming on Monday. Travelers reported moving quickly through airport checkpoints Friday after authorities opened extra screening lanes and used bomb-sniffing dogs to give some passengers a break from removing their shoes.

BRENHAM, Texas (AP) — Texas officials say they'll remain on the alert for flooding from swollen rivers as more rain is forecast for the holiday weekend. Torrential thunderstorms Friday killed at least one person and left three people missing.

MIAMI (AP) — South Carolina is expecting an unwelcome visitor this Memorial Day weekend. A tropical storm warning has been issued for the South Carolina coast after forecasters say the second tropical cyclone of the Atlantic season formed. Tropical storm conditions are expected to first reach the coast tonight.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Education Department has appointed a new lawyer to oversee the turnaround of for-profit schools once owned by Corinthian Colleges Inc. He's Clark Kent Ervin, an attorney at Squire Patton Boggs LLP. An Associated Press review found trouble at the schools and questioned the previous monitor's independence. Corinthian Colleges was one of the largest chains of for-profit colleges when it collapsed in 2015 amid allegations of fraud.

NANCHANG, China (AP) — China's largest private property developer is taking on the Disney empire. The Wanda Group opened an entertainment complex today that it's positioning as a distinctly homegrown rival to Disney and its $5.5 billion Shanghai theme park opening next month. Wanda's massive site includes an $800 million China-themed park, an indoor shopping mall and the world's largest ocean park. Seeking to capitalize on China's rising middle class, developers are planning dozens of Chinese theme parks.
