COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho man accused of shooting a pastor will face an aggravated battery charge instead of attempted murder.

Kyle Andrew Odom will also be charged with using a deadly weapon in committing a felony, according to the Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors say Odom shot Coeur d'Alene pastor Tim Remington of The Altar Church six times in March, reported The Spokesman-Review (http://bit.ly/25jLxiZ ). He was arrested two days later in Washington, D.C., after throwing objects over the south fence of the White House.

Remington survived the shooting. He has said he forgives Odom and wants to help rehabilitate him.

Both the battery and attempted murder charges have a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, but battery can be easier to prove. It requires only "general intent," meaning prosecutors need to prove that Odom meant to shoot Remington, but not that he hurt him.

The deadly weapon charge could add another 15 years to Odom's prison sentence if he is convicted.

"We talked with the Remington family and law enforcement in advance of making the change to the complaint," Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh said Wednesday.

Odom is represented by the Kootenai Public Defender's office. Public Defender John Adams said Wednesday that he has no comment on the amended charges.
