SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego elementary school will feature a new name next school year after officials agreed to drop the current name honoring Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/25kQQ5c ) that the school board voted Tuesday to change the name to Pacific Valley Leadership Elementary School.
The new name was chosen by students and approved by a San Diego Unified School District committee. The committee had rejected previous proposals of shortening the original name to Lee Elementary and naming the school after abolitionist Frederick Douglass and slain San Diego police Officer Archie Buggs.
The decision comes after a district poll conducted in November showed families, employees and community members opposed the name change. Students were the only group that largely supported the effort.
