WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department intends to seek the death penalty against Dylann Roof, the man charged with killing nine black parishioners last year in a church in Charleston, South Carolina. Attorney General Loretta Lynch cited "the nature of the alleged crime and the resulting harm." Roof is also charged in state court with murder, and South Carolina prosecutors have already announced plans to seek the death penalty.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — The National Weather Service says a "probable" tornado touched down in northeast Oklahoma. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An attempt to require schools in Oklahoma to provide separate restrooms for students who object to sharing them with transgender students has died in a state House committee. The measure was filed in response to the federal government's guidance on the use of bathrooms and locker rooms by transgender students.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Whether a strict Texas voter ID law should be struck down, upheld, or, perhaps, adjusted is now up to 15 federal appeals court judges. The full 5th Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments about the law, which requires voters to present one of seven specific forms of photo ID to cast a ballot. Supporters of the law say it prevents fraud. Opponents say it discriminates against low-income, African-American and Latino voters.
EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say they have found bodies believed to be those of a Washington state woman and man who had been missing for six weeks and presumed killed. A sheriff's spokeswoman says one of two brothers charged with the slayings of Monique Patenaude and her husband, Patrick Shunn, provided information that led detectives to pinpoint the remote location.
