MEDINA, Ohio (AP) — A trial has begun for the father of a 21-month-old Ohio girl whose decomposed body was found in a crib.
Thirty-four-year-old Eric Warfel faces charges that include abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence at a trial that began Monday afternoon in Medina County, south of Cleveland. A judge — not a jury — will decide Warfel's guilt or innocence. He was found competent to stand trial after previously pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.
Ember Warfel's body was discovered by a cable company worker last July in a Medina apartment.
Medical examiners couldn't determine how Ember died because of her body's state of decomposition. Warfel's attorney has said Ember was born with severe medical problems.
Warfel had another daughter who died suddenly in 2013.
