RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Parents of Rapid City students are demanding the school district get tougher on weapons.
The Rapid City Journal reported Sunday (http://bit.ly/1U7ps26 ) that Rana Graham and Jennifer Nairn have founded a Facebook page titled Parents for Safety in Rapid City schools. The page's followers have started to meet to discuss their concerns.
As of mid-May, students, teachers or administrators had discovered or reported 39 weapons. Graham said her 12-year-old son was nearly stabbed with a box cutter in January. Nairn said her son brought a knife to school two years ago and wasn't suspended. They want a zero-tolerance policy and metal detectors.
Assistant Superintendent Brad Berens said only high school students get suspended for weapons violations and he's uncertain how effective metal detectors would be since anything can be a weapon.
