SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — University of Illinois trustees have approved a plan to provide open access to research published by university faculty and others.
The vote Thursday comes three years after the passage of a 2013 state law requiring public universities to make their research available to the public.
According to The News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/25crqa2), Vice President for Academic Affairs Christophe Pierre said researchers will maintain ownership of their work. And they can ask for waivers in some instances.
The university already maintains an open-access database of research that faculty and others can voluntarily feed their work to.
Some other universities around the country such as the University of Michigan already have policies requiring free, public access to scholarly research.
