BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) — The president of the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, will step down in a little more than a year.

Danielle Ripich, the president since 2006, says she will retire on June 30, 2017.

The 71-year-old Ripich says the university is coming up on the end of a ten-year expansion plan in 2017 and it's a logical time to retire.

She says University of New England has grown from "a little school in the woods of Maine into a modern university."

The school is the largest private university in Maine and it is the home of the state's only medical school. The university has about 10,000 students.

Ripich says she will be spending some time on her farm in Ireland and dedicating some time to writing.
