The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, says the greatest risk for bad weather is in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, but there also could be isolated tornadoes in parts of Missouri and western Illinois. Yesterday, tornadoes, hail and strong winds hit parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, but no major damage was reported.
FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta (AP) — The more than 80,000 evacuated residents of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, are hoping that cooler temperatures and light rain will help firefighters get the upper hand on a wildfire that's already burned nearly 400,000 acres. Officials say 1,600 homes and other buildings have been torched, the gas has been turned off, the power grid is damaged and water is not drinkable. They say there's no timeline for residents to return.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is trying to pressure Congress into coming up with a solution to Puerto Rico's $70 billion debt crisis. Today, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew is traveling to the U.S. territory to call attention to the financial struggle he says already has "harmed the health, safety and welfare of the 3.5 million Americans living in Puerto Rico." The territory missed a nearly $370 million bond payment May 1, the largest in a series of missed payments.
BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Authorities in New Jersey say a convicted child killer who escaped from prison had indicated that he wanted to turn himself in at a rest area 50 miles away, where he was spotted yesterday on video surveillance. But state police say Arthur Buckel was gone by the time authorities got there. Buckel was discovered missing last Tuesday at Bayside State Prison in Hammonton. He was serving time for aggravated assault, drug possession and burglary, but had previously served 14 years for killing a 10-month-old child.
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (AP) — A Muslim teen says she's hurt after being identified in her California high school's yearbook as "Isis Phillips." Bayan Zehlif says in a Facebook post that the yearbook at Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga made the embarrassing mistake and that school officials say it was a "typo." Zehlif says, "I beg to differ." The district superintendent says Zehlif was misidentified as another student whose name is Isis.
