KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban have responded to the execution by Afghanistan of six men convicted of terrorism. The Taliban issued a statement deploring the treatment of "vulnerable prisoners" and accusing the Kabul government and the United States of torture, inhumane treatment and "killings under suspicious circumstances." For the Afghan government, the executions signal a tougher stance toward the Taliban after they rejected peace talks.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Despite all efforts to convince them otherwise, Iraqis are still inclined to wonder whose side the U.S. is really on. Many Iraqis think the Islamic State group is a U.S. creation designed to help America steal Iraqi oil. Government-allied Shiite militiamen post videos of U.S. supplies purportedly seized from IS militants. And newspapers and TV networks repeat conspiracy theories.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — There's one winning ticket for the $429.6 million Powerball jackpot. Lottery officials say it was bought somewhere in New jersey. The winning Powerball numbers were 5-25-26-44-66 and the Powerball number was 9. It's the biggest prize since the $1.6 billion doled out in January.
LAC LA BICHE, Alberta (AP) — No deaths or injuries have been reported despite the mass-evacuation of tens of thousands of people from the area of a raging wildfire in Canada's Alberta province. People first evacuated to work camps north of Alberta's main oil sands city of Fort McMurray were moved again on Friday and Saturday. Officials say about 19,000 people were airlifted or driven in convoys. Officials worry the fire could spread into neighboring Saskatchewan.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Police Department says it will resume a search today for a man who got onto the United Nations property, climbed a wall and jumped into the East River. Police say the call about the man came from U.N. security workers. An initial search by divers turned up nothing.
