SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An already large construction project at Salt Lake City International Airport has been expanded to add a second concourse to the one already under construction.

Officials say they still plan to finish construction by 2020. They say the second concourse will add 30 gates in two phases to accommodate projected passenger growth and replace aging facilities.

Spokeswoman Nancy Volmer says the airport currently serves more than 22 million passengers a year, more than double its initial design capacity.

The North Concourse will add $740 million to the project, bringing the total cost to $2.6 billion. Volmer says funding for the new concourse will come from cash on hand, financial support from airlines and general airport revenue bonds.

She says no taxpayer money is being used for the redevelopment project.
