DETROIT (AP) — The union that represents Detroit's public school teachers is urging members to call in sick Monday, and the district says more than 20 schools will be closed. The move by the Detroit Federation of Teachers comes a day after the district's transition manager said DPS will have no money to continue paying teachers this summer without further funding from the state.
NEW YORK (AP) — Fire officials say the main body of a huge fire that heavily damaged a historic church in New York City has been knocked down. One minor injury has been reported in the blaze that started Sunday evening at the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava in Manhattan. DENALI NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE, Alaska (AP) — Authorities say a hiker has been found dead in Alaska's Denali National Park and Preserve. They believe he fell and suffered a fatal head injury. The National Park Service says a ground team found the body of 24-year-old Michael Purdy of Portland, Oregon, on Sunday near the north end of the Savage River Loop Trail.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The entire Bible is being read aloud non-stop this week from a podium on the plaza of the U.S. Capitol. The 27th annual U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon opened with a hymn and a prayer Sunday evening. Volunteer readers will take turns at the podium day and night until the last "Amen" of the book of Revelation is read on Thursday, the National Day of Prayer.
