MARRERO, La. (AP) — A Jefferson Parish man has been booked on a second-degree murder charge after his girlfriend's 2-year-old son died of head injuries.

Sheriff Newell Normand says in a news release that 27-year-old Seth Redell told investigators he was caring for his girlfriend's toddler while she was out of town.

Officers received a call about an unresponsive child April 24 at a home in Marrero, and 2 year-old Hayden Umbenhower was taken to University Hospital. He underwent emergency surgery for head injuries.

Physicians said Hayden had subdural hematomas, brain swelling and hemorrhaging in both eyes — injuries they said were consistent with shaken baby syndrome, according to the sheriff. The child died Friday.

Redell remained in the Jefferson Parish jail Saturday. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney.
