INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ted Cruz is describing Carly Fiorina as an "extraordinary leader." Cruz today introduced Fiorina as his running mate as he continues his uphill battle against Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. Fiorina endorsed Cruz earlier in the year after abandoning her own presidential bid. The former chief executive at Hewlett-Packard has never held elected office.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders says he's plowing forward with his efforts to become the Democratic nominee, despite a growing gap between him and front-runner Hillary Clinton. Sanders spoke at Purdue University in Indiana today, ahead of the state's May 3 primary. He took swipes at Clinton, saying she supported international trade agreements, and cited the recent move by air-conditioning giant Carrier to outsource more than 2,000 jobs from Indiana to Mexico. Sanders also criticized Clinton for taking campaign contributions from large corporate donors.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are increasingly optimistic they will take back control of the Senate in November's elections. Their hopes were boosted by last night's outcome in the key battleground of Pennsylvania. The Democratic establishment choice, Katie McGinty, easily dispatched her opponent, Joe Sestak, in the Democratic primary. Establishment Democrats scored another victory in the Maryland Democratic Senate primary to replace longtime Sen. Barbara Mikulski.

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago judge says there's nothing "more stunning than to have the words 'serial child molester' and 'speaker of the House' in the same sentence." He said both terms applied to Dennis Hastert, the former speaker who was sentenced today to 15 months in prison in a hush-money case that revealed accusations that he had sexually abused teenagers during his years as a high school wrestling coach. Hastert told the judge, "I am deeply ashamed to be standing here." He said of some of the boys he had coached, "They looked up to me, and I took advantage of them."

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have closed mostly higher on Wall Street, but the gains were checked by weakness in the technology sector. Energy stocks were among the biggest winners as the price of oil rose. Technology shares turned lower, pulled down by a 6 percent drop in Apple after the company reported a drop in iPhone sales and its first decline in revenue in more than a decade. The Dow finished 51 points higher. The S&P rose three points. But the Nasdaq composite was down 25 points.
