UPPER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Officials say a New Jersey emergency medical technician has died as a result of injuries he sustained in the line of duty.

The Upper Township Rescue Squad said in a statement Saturday that Mort Schmerling has died.

Schmerling responded to a medical emergency in Seaville on April 13 when he collapsed. Authorities said he died Saturday.

The rescue squad's statement called it a line of duty death.

No further information was available.
