SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Former Sen. Bob Bennett says a recent stroke paralyzed the left side of his body and left him unable to stand up or swallow.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1SoA8qb ) that the 82-year-old Republican was already suffering from pancreatic cancer and learned about a month ago that the cancer spread to his stomach and near his liver.
Bennett served as Utah's junior senator alongside Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch for 18 years.
He spoke to the Deseret News by telephone Thursday from his home in northern Virginia. Bennett says he's been getting hospice care at home since being released from the hospital. His wife, Joyce, has been at his side and all six of his children have visited him since the April 11 stroke.
