PEDERNALES, Ecuador (AP) — Officials in Ecuador say at least 238 people are dead, more than 1,500 injured and hundreds of buildings destroyed after a strong earthquake rocked the country's Pacific coast. Rescuers are pulling people out of rubble, sometimes digging with their hands. Major roads are closed in the hardest-hit areas. Last night's magnitude-7.8 quake was the strongest to hit Ecuador since 1979.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A top public health official says there's no reason for women in the U.S. who are getting pregnant to worry about the Zika (ZEE'-kuh) virus, unless they travel to countries that have outbreaks. Dr. Anthony Fauci (FOW'-chee) of the National Institutes of Health says there's been no local transmission of the virus in the United States, so any talk about women in the country delaying pregnancy "is not even an issue for discussion at this point." Fauci appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation" and "Fox News Sunday.
MIAMI (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board is resuming its search for the data recorder of the sunken El Faro cargo ship. The 790-foot freighter sank last October after losing engine power and getting caught in a major hurricane on its way from Jacksonville, Florida, to San Juan, Puerto Rico. All 33 aboard died. The ship was found in 15,000 feet of water near the Bahamas. Investigators will use an underwater vehicle to help locate the data recorder.
DENVER (AP) — A spring snowstorm is still spinning its way through Colorado and Wyoming and bringing more rain to Oklahoma and Texas. The National Weather Service says a few strong storms are possible today as the precipitation pushes into eastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas by Sunday night. And snow flurries in the Rockies could continue into Tuesday as the storm winds down.
NEW YORK (AP) — "The Jungle Book" has opened at the top of the box office with an estimated $103.6 million in North America, making it one of the biggest April debuts. Disney says the film also took in an estimated $136.1 million overseas. Ice Cube's "Barbershop: The Next Cut" opened in second place with $20.2 million. Last weekend's No. 1, "The Boss," drops to No. 3 with $10.2 million.
