QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — An earthquake expert says there's "no causal relationship" between the earthquakes in Ecuador and Japan. David Rothery, a professor of planetary geosciences at The Open University, northeast of London, says Ecuador's 7.8 magnitude quake was about six times stronger and released more energy. The quake killed at least 77 people and spread damage over hundreds of miles.
MINAMIASO, Japan (AP) — Some evacuees in southwestern Japan's earthquake zone say food distribution is a bit meager, just two rice balls for dinner. Officials say 41 people died in the twin quakes while 11 people remained missing today. Thousands of rescue workers have fanned out in often mountainous terrain and helicopters can be seen going into and out of the area, much of which has been cut off by landslides and road and bridge damage on Kyushu island.
BEIRUT (AP) — A U.N. agency says things are getting desperate in a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria's capital, Damascus. Around 10,000 civilians are trapped poor humanitarian conditions as fighting has rages between Islamic State militants and other extremists. The U.N. Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, says residents of the Yarmouk camp have gone without food or water for more than a week.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The first quarter civilian death toll in Afghanistan is down compared to the same period in 2015. The United Nations says 600 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan's war between January and April, but that the number of wounded civilians has risen. The U.N. said 60 percent of casualties were caused by "actions by anti-government elements," apparently referring to the Taliban.
FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — Alabama authorities say a police officer is hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in the face by a suspect during a traffic stop and chase. The suspect apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot. Police haven't given a motive and it's unclear how the incident happened.
