QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Ecuador's vice president says at least 28 people have been killed in a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck on the country's central coast. In a televised address, Jorge Glas said the dead were located in the cities of Manta, Guayaquil and Portoviejo. He also said the earthquake was the strongest to hit Ecuador in decades.
OZU, Japan (AP) — Search efforts are resuming for about half-a-dozen people still missing from back-to-back earthquakes that killed 41 people in southern Japan. The search on Sunday is focused on debris-strewn communities in a mountainous area near Mount Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan. U.S. aircraft are being added to the search and recovery effort.
MIAMI (AP) — Nine prisoners from Guantanamo Bay are being resettled in Saudi Arabia. The Pentagon says the U.S. released them on Saturday. All are Yemeni but have family ties to Saudi Arabia. None of the men had been charged and all but one had been cleared for release from the U.S. base in Cuba since at least 2010. They couldn't be sent to their homeland because of instability there.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two teenagers who were swept out to sea at San Francisco's Ocean Beach are still missing. A search is under way. A Coast Guard spokesman says witnesses report seeing four people playing in the surf Saturday afternoon. He says two, described as 17-year-old boys, were in the water up to their waists when they were swept away. The others returned to shore.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities say a 4-year-old girl has been fatally shot by a 5-year-old sibling in Philadelphia and police are searching for the mother's boyfriend, who's believed to have owned the gun used. Police say the girl was shot in the face in a home in the Upper Kensington neighborhood in north Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. No arrests have been made.
