BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore police say an off-duty officer shot and killed a gunman who was robbing a liquor store.

Department spokesman T.J. Smith said at a news conference near Green Tree Liquors in West Baltimore that the officer, who was in plain clothes, went into the store just before 6 p.m. on Friday to make a purchase.

Smith says while the officer was waiting, a man brandishing a handgun burst into the store and announced a robbery.

Police say the officer pulled out his service weapon and shot the man several times. Smith says the man died at a hospital.

No one else was hurt.

Smith says Baltimore police officers are required to carry their service weapons while they are off duty. He says the officer is now on routine administrative leave.

Smith did not identify the officer or the gunman.
