ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — Three elementary schools in Rockford have made the list of "Most Endangered Historic Places" in Illinois.
The list was announced Wednesday by Landmarks Illinois, a nonprofit preservation group. It also includes a YWCA building in Springfield, the Massac County Courthouse in Metropolis and other threatened and deteriorating sites.
In Rockford, the elementary schools are scheduled for closure and demolition under the school district's $250 million, 10-year plan. The district's plan calls for construction of two new schools and other improvements.
The Rockford Register Star reports (http://bit.ly/1VmaQ1F) a community meeting is planned for Thursday to discuss the fate of Walker Elementary School, one of the three schools on Landmarks Illinois' endangered list.
The others are Nelson and Kishwaukee elementary schools.
