JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State University officials say construction is on target for its campus in Queretaro, Mexico, to open to students in the fall of 2017.
The Jonesboro Sun (http://bit.ly/1Nmugvj ) reports that the first phase of the project includes building an academic area with computer labs, a library, academic offices, a student union, classroom and labs on 87 acres of the 370-acre campus.
It will also include four student residence halls, a faculty residence building and a sports area.
"It is an interesting design based on a lot of input from people on this campus," said Tim Hudson, the university's chancellor.
Arkansas State University Campus Queretaro, a private business foundation in Mexico, is funding phase one's $75 million in construction. The foundation will monetize all construction and any operating deficits for up to three years after courses begin, while the university will utilize funds generated from private gifts for the campus' startup costs.
The campus's first phase will be equipped for about 5,000 students. Hudson said university officials expect to have 1,000 students in its first year.
The university campus is part of a planned 2,125-acre comprehensive community development near Queretaro that will include commercial, residential and recreation amenities for up to 70,000 residents.
