NEW YORK (AP) — Bernie Sanders says he would "very much like to" meet Pope Francis when he travels to the Vatican next week but he has not received an official invitation from the Catholic leader. VATICAN CITY (AP) — It doesn't represent any explicit change in church doctrine -- but a new major church document today from Pope Francis calls on Catholics to look to their own consciences -- instead of relying on church rules -- on complex issues involving sex, marriage and family life. The document is entitled "The Joy of Love." It demands that the church change its emphasis from doctrine to mercy in confronting some of the most difficult issues facing Catholics.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The cost of mailing a letter is going down. Beginning Sunday, the price of a first-class stamp drops two cents, to 47 cents. The reduction is the result of an expiring surcharge that had been put in place in January 2014 to help the beleaguered Postal Service recoup $4.6 billion in losses dating back to the Great Recession.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A St. Louis jury has sided with tobacco giant Philip Morris in a class-action lawsuit that sought about $1.5 billion. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the suit alleged the company deceived smokers by claiming light cigarettes were safer than regular cigarettes. The jury sided with the company after deliberating less than an hour yesterday following a month-long trial.
