SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The city of Syracuse has worked out a deal with Syracuse University that will see the private institution contribute $7 million over five years to the city to offset its use of city services.
Mayor Stephanie Miner announced the agreement Thursday. She says it's a sign of "good faith" and an acknowledgment that the city and the university can work together for the entire community.
The university owns a significant amount of untaxed land within Syracuse, meaning city taxpayers bear the price of providing fire and police protection, public works and other municipal services.
Of the $7 million, $4.5 million will fund general city services and $2.5 million will go to local neighborhood organizations.
Under a 2011 agreement, the university was paying $500,000 annually to the city.
