CHICAGO (AP) — A one-day teachers' walkout in Chicago will close schools for nearly 400,000 students today. The teachers have been working without a contract since June. They say the strike is aimed at getting lawmakers to adequately fund education and other programs. Chicago schools will be opening contingency sites at churches, libraries and school buildings.
ATLANTA (AP) — There's no word of injuries after tornadoes hit Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi last night. Tornadoes touched down in northern and central Alabama, southeastern Louisiana and east central Mississippi. Emergency management officials say at least a dozen homes were damaged in the Columbus, Mississippi area.
WASHINGTON (AP) —Frustration over the slow pace of reducing nuclear stockpiles is shadowing the last day of the nuclear security summit in Washington. Despite years of prodding by President Barack Obama, the global stockpile of material that could be used in nuclear bombs remains in the thousands of metric tons. Security officials warn that radioactive ingredients for a "dirty bomb" are insecure in many parts of the globe.
WASHINGTON (AP) — This morning the federal government releases jobless figures for March. Economists surveyed by the data firm FactSet believe that in March, employers added some 200,000 jobs to the economy, keeping the unemployment rate at 4.9 percent. The experts believe that employers remain confident enough in the economy to add to their staffs, despite signs of sluggish growth.
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — Police in Hot Springs, Arkansas, evacuated about 20 homes after a man mistook a Civil War-era landmine for a cannonball and took it home. Police say the U.S. Air Force Bomb Squad had to look for a place to explode the ordinance after evacuated residents Thursday afternoon. Police say a man dug up what he thought was a cannonball near Danville. He put the 32-pound landmine in the back of his pickup and drove about 65 miles home to Hot Springs.
