PHOENIX (AP) — A jury has convicted an Arizona man of conspiring to provide support to the Islamic State terrorist group. Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem also was found guilty on other counts stemming from an attack last spring at a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest in Texas. Authorities say Kareem bankrolled and motivated two Islamic State followers who were killed in a shootout while trying to carry out a rampage at the anti-Islam event. Kareem also was convicted of providing guns used in the attack.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A New York pizza shop owner who admitted he tried to recruit people for the Islamic State group has been sentenced to more than 22 years in prison. Mufid Elfgeeh (MOO'-fihd ELF'-gee) was sentenced today in federal court in Rochester. Authorities say he tried to recruit three people to join the Islamic State group to fight in Syria. He was operating a convenience store and pizza shop in Rochester at the time. According to court filings, Elfgeeh has renounced the Islamic State since his 2014 arrest.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The governor of Michigan has repeatedly apologized for his role in the Flint water crisis -- but at a congressional hearing today, Gov. Rick Snyder also blamed career bureaucrats in Washington and in his home state. Lawmakers also heard from the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy, who said the fault likes with Snyder and other state officials. She noted that Flint was under state management when the city's water supply was switched -- and that the state didn't require that the river water be treated for corrosion. (a1096)
NEW YORK (AP) — An afternoon surge in stocks, coming on the heels of a four-week rally, has turned the Dow positive for the year. Oil closed above $40, its highest level since early December. The Dow rose 155 points, while the S&P gained 13 points. The Nasdaq is up 11 points.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy is going to remain behind bars. He's lost his bid for release from jail ahead of trial on federal charges stemming from an armed standoff against government agents two years ago. Bundy and four of his adult sons are among 19 people now facing federal charges. A federal magistrate in Las Vegas noted that Bundy had ignored federal court orders for many years ahead of the confrontation.
