FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) — A Clearfield man accused of causing the death of a woman he punched during a New Year's Eve party has been sentenced to a year in prison.
The Standard-Examiner in Ogden reports (http://bit.ly/1PaOlnX) that Alcario Jesus Archuleta-Valdez was sentenced Tuesday, after he changed his mind about withdrawing a guilty plea to an assault charge.
His lawyer says that Archuleta-Valdez decided to go ahead with the sentencing.
Prosecutors say 33-year-old Archuleta-Valdez punched Bobbie Jo Barnett after a fight broke out at the party they were attending. She fell to the ground and hit her head, but stood up and walked around immediately after the punch.
The 31-year-old woman complained of a bad headache two days later and was taken to the hospital where she died of head trauma.
