LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada won't face any federal penalties following its Common Core testing meltdown last year that left most of the state's students unable to finish their annual mandated exam. The U.S. Department of Education has given Nevada a rare exemption from the federal mandate requiring at least 95 percent of students to participate in an annual statewide test. Testing was halted last April in Nevada, Montana and North Dakota due to computer glitches on the part of the test maker.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 46-year-old ex-convict accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and wounding her mother more than three years ago wants to challenge the constitutionality of Nevada's death penalty. Robert Brown Jr.'s defense attorney says she's also preparing jury questionnaires ahead of Brown's capital murder trial, scheduled to begin Aug. 29. Brown is accused of killing 29-year-old Nichole Nick and wounding Nick's 58-year-old mother in December 2012.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — The state of Nevada has agreed to new training and reporting requirements to settle a federal lawsuit accusing state public assistance offices of failing to do enough to help low-income clients register to vote. Among other things, the deal requires the secretary of state to appoint a statewide coordinator to ensure the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services is complying with the National Voter Registration Act.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas airport has opened a cellphone parking lot for drivers waiting to pick up passengers. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that McCarran International Airport officials says they held a soft opening of the lot last week and are still working out details like signage, lighting and security cameras.
