SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Federal prosecutors want to seize $191,500 from businesses with ties to a polygamous group accused of carrying out a multi-million dollar food stamp fraud scheme.
Authorities filed court documents this week to get funds they say were diverted from food stamp purchases and put into bank accounts of several companies involved in the scheme.
Authorities say the polygamous sect on the Utah-Arizona border diverted at least $12 million worth of federal benefits.
Attorneys for the suspects weren't immediately available for comment.
All but one of the 11 people indicted have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The suspects include Lyle Jeffs, who runs the day-to-day operations of the group with his brother Warren Jeffs serving a life sentence in Texas for sexually assaulting girls he considered brides.
