SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has once again heightened tensions in the region. South Korea's Defense Ministry says the isolated regime fired several short-range projectiles into the sea. The launches came just hours after the United Nations slapped sanctions on Pyongyang for its recent nuclear test and long-range rocket launch. The North had warned that enactment of the law would result in "miserable ruin."

MIAMI (AP) — GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz is lavishing praise on retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who says he doesn't see a political path forward for his campaign. Cruz credits Carson for "touching millions" of Americans. Carson's announcement comes a day after Cruz strongly suggested that candidates trailing him, Carson, John Kasich and Marco Rubio, consider withdrawing and uniting behind him to stop front-runner Donald Trump.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Abortion providers in Texas say a law being argued before the U.S. Supreme Court would slash the number of facilities in the state by three-fourths. The state says the aim is to improve patient safety. Opponents say the law, which is being copied in other states, is a ploy to end abortion. The divided high court currently has just eight members because of the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A Maryland appeals court has thrown out an attempted murder conviction because police in Baltimore used a clandestine cellphone-surveillance device known as a stingray. Prosecutors did not disclose initially that the device, also operated by other agencies, was used. The court said its use violates the Fourth Amendment.

CONCRETE, Wash. (AP) — A Washington state man has died after authorities say he accidentally shot himself in the face while taking selfies. The death is being investigated as accidental.
