LAS VEGAS (AP) — A convicted panderer is due before a judge on murder and other charges in a car-to-car shooting that killed two California women and critically wounded a man near the Las Vegas Strip. Omar Jamal Talley was arrested a day after the Feb. 19 shooting deaths of Melissa Mendoza and Jennifer Chicas in a parking garage.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 26-year-old North Las Vegas man who was accused of abducting and raping teenage girls has agreed to plead guilty to sex assault charges that'll get him at least 35 years in state prison. Jimmy Carter Kim accepted a last-minute plea deal that dismissed 79 charges. Kim is due to plead guilty March 10 to one sex assault charge and three counts of sexual assault of a minor.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A lawsuit against the state's sweeping new school choice program is up for a hearing in a Las Vegas court this afternoon. Lawyers for the state are expected to defend the Education Savings Accounts program against a legal challenge by the ACLU. The voucher-style program allows parents to claim the majority of their child's per-pupil education funds and use it toward private schooling.
SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — A Sparks city councilwoman says she'll seek the Nevada Senate seat of the late state Sen. Debbie Smith. Julia Ratti says she was devastated by Smith's death last month, saying she considered Smith her mentor. Smith's daughter Erin says Smith's family asked Ratti to consider running.
