RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A 23-year-old Long Island man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for strangling and beating a high school friend and burying him alive.
Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/1TvWJEA ) that Thomas Liming was sentenced Monday after being convicted of second-degree murder in the 2011 death of 18-year-old Kyle Underhill.
Liming had claimed he acted in self-defense. But prosecutors said Underhill's injuries were so extensive there was no way that Liming was acting in self-defense.
At the sentencing, Liming addressed the victim's parents, saying he was "truly sorry" and that he never intended to hurt their son.
The victim's mother, Aimee Catanzaro, told the court that said ever since her son's death she hasn't slept one night without nightmares. Underhill's stepfather said what Liming did was "brutal and incredibly disturbing."
