PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — About 175 people gathered at Providence College's student union to discuss racism, discrimination and academic freedom at the Rhode Island school.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1mLa7I0 ) Thursday's forum was co-sponsored by student organizations that held a 13-hour sit-in Tuesday outside the office of the college's president, the Rev. Brian Shanley, and a faculty group combating racism.

Students and faculty members came together to share personal stories of racial profiling and other issues affecting members of the Providence College community.

Julia Jordan-Zachery, director of the college's black studies program, says he has been profiled about 10 times in her eight years as a professor at PC.

Sociology professor Eric Hirsch spoke out against curriculum that he says favors "dead white males" and justifies colonialism, slavery and genocide.
