TAHOE CITY, Calif. (AP) — Officials say two vehicles have been struck by avalanches near a Tahoe City-area ski resort. No injuries have been reported. Crews worked to clear the road, which was reopened to traffic about five hours later. Officials at Alpine Meadows say ski operations were shut down for the rest of the day yesterday due to high avalanche danger.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Federal investigators raided a U.S. Bureau of Reclamation office, an accounting firm and the home of a regional finance chief for the water management agency in what officials called a public corruption probe. A Reclamation spokeswoman says the agency is cooperating in the investigation. Authorities also searched the Henderson home of Rick Leavitt, a bureau official for more than 20 years. A message left for Leavitt wasn't immediately returned.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Authorities have released images of what they believe a woman looked like before her body was found buried in a shallow grave near a Carson City walking trail last year. An autopsy revealed that the woman was between the ages of 42 and 71 and had reddish, blonde hair. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the case to come forward.

SOCORRO, N.M. (AP) — The head of a Nevada-based research institute has been named the new president of New Mexico Tech. The school's Board of Regents has announced that Dr. Stephen Wells has been chosen to lead the Socorro-based university that has about 2,200 students and is getting a five-year contract. Wells has been president of the Desert Research Institute, a research institution with 560 employees in the Nevada System of Higher Education.
