BOSTON (AP) — State education officials say an estimated 34,000 students remain on charter school waiting lists for the 2015-2016 school year.

The number released Thursday by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is based on data from last October and is down slightly from an earlier estimate of 37,000 students based on data collected in March of 2015.

Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester said his office and the state's charter schools have worked to ensure the accuracy of the waiting list numbers.

Chester said that each spring, charter schools submit the number of students enrolled for the upcoming school year as well as the number of students who were placed on their waiting lists.

He said the reduction from the initial spring list is consistent with fall reductions reported in recent years.
