TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Officials say a joint, secret sting along Arizona's border with Mexico has snared drug cartel suspects, guns and drugs. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Gillian M. Christensen says two dozen alleged high-level Sinaloa Cartel members have been taken into custody. They're being held by Mexico and the U.S. is requesting extradition.
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — The remains of a 13-year-old girl are being sent from North Carolina, where they were found, back to Virginia for an autopsy. Meanwhile authorities say a first-degree murder charge has been filed against a Virginia Tech student in the death of Nicole Madison Lovell. Police initially arrested David Eisenhauer, a freshman from Columbia, Maryland, and charged him with abduction. The girl had been missing since last week.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco police officers are being asked to follow a version of 'see something, say something' in an effort to beat down racism in the ranks. Officers are being given a pledge to take to turn in colleagues displaying intolerant behavior, such as slurs and jokes targeting people of color, gays and women. The pledge is part of a broader public relations campaign by the embattled police department to repair frayed relations with minority neighborhoods.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — MIT student engineers will be getting a chance to make the next big thing in public transportation a reality. They've won a competition to transform SpaceX and Tesla Motors co-founder Elon Musk's idea into a design for a Hyperloop. It's a high-speed ground transport concept proposed by Musk to transport "pods" of 20-to-30 people through a 12-foot diameter tube at speeds of roughly 700 mph.
UNDATED (AP) — Amid the outcry over the Oscar nominations, diversity turned up alive and well at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Sundance Film Festival. Shortly after the screen actors handed out awards to Queen Latifah, Uzo Aduba, Viola Davis and Idris Elba, Nate Parker's Sundance sensation "The Birth of a Nation," a drama about Nat Turner's slave rebellion, swept the festival's awards.
