SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling for an investigation after video surfaced of an apparently live cow picked up by a front-end loader and tossed into a dump truck after a livestock semitrailer crash. PETA sent a letter yesterday to the Weber County Sheriff calling for potential criminal charges. The Standard-Examiner of Ogden reports about 70 cows died after the crash on the on-ramp to Interstate 84 from Interstate 15 in Riverdale on Monday.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gay rights advocates say a lawmaker's proposal to require Utah judges to favor heterosexual couples over same-sex couples in adoptions or foster care placements is blatantly unconstitutional. Republican Rep. Kraig Powell says last year's U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage doesn't stop Utah from preferring that a child have a mother and father instead of same-sex parents.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah teenager who was one of three victims in the teacher sex case will appeal the December dismissal of his lawsuit against the school district. Court records show that attorneys for the teenager have filed a notice of appeal in the case against Davis School District.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent is asking an appeals court to bar prosecutors from filing any new charges against him in connection with allegations he slammed a man's face into a concrete floor. The case has twice been dismissed by different judges and court documents show that Jon Martinson Jr. wants the case dismissed with prejudice, meaning so it can't be filed a third time.
