SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Several Utah universities are joining colleges around the country in restricting hoverboards on campus as federal officials review dozens of fires tied to the self-balancing scooters. At least four schools aren't allowing them in student housing, and two institutions bar riding them on campus. Nationwide, more than 30 colleges and universities have banned hoverboards citing concerns about collisions and falls as well as fire danger from lithium-ion batteries that power them.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The organizers of Salt Lake Comic Con and San Diego Comic-Con may be on the verge of resolving an ongoing name-trademark dispute. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that attorneys for the two pop-culture conventions asked a federal judge to give them more time to work on a possible agreement on name rights. Both parties will meet with the magistrate judge on Wednesday in San Diego.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — Police officers from around Utah came out to support a slain officer's son at the boy's first hockey game without his father. The Deseret News reports that hundreds of officers showed up at Acord Ice Arena in West Valley City to cheer on 13-year-old Jack Barney. Unified police Officer Douglas Barney was fatally shot Jan. 17 by an ex-convict who fled the scene of a traffic accident.

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A former medical assistant in Roy is facing charges that she wrote hundreds of fake painkiller prescriptions. The Standard-Examiner in Ogden reports that 37-year-old Lori Hoskins is in Weber County Jail. She faces suspicion of insurance fraud, forgery of a prescription for a controlled substance and identity fraud. She will appear in court Feb. 3.
