PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) — The Veterans Administration is allowing a 92-year-old World War II veteran who is dying of cancer to spend his last days with his wife in a Colorado nursing home that is not approved by the agency, but his family says he is probably too close to death to move.
Elmer Melchi (Mel-KAI), who jumped into Normandy on D-Day, is in hospice care, while June Melchi, who has dementia, is at a nursing home in Pueblo.
Son Garry Melchi told The Pueblo Chieftain (http://goo.gl/EhzChg ) on Friday the VA signed the paperwork to allow his father to be transferred, but the elder Melchi has been in and out of consciousness.
June Melchi lives in a nursing home that does not have a VA contract, and the family didn't want to move her to a VA-approved care center because it might confuse her.
