SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Officials say the veteran Utah police officer who was working overtime to pay for his cancer treatments was shot to death by a fugitive who went missing from a drug rehab center for parolees last month. Unified police officer Douglas Scott Barney had been on the force 18 years when he encountered 31-year-old Cory Lee Henderson Sunday morning in suburb of Holladay. The 44-year-old officer was fatally shot in the head. Backup officers responded and exchanged gunfire with Henderson, who died at the scene.

CEDAR FORT, Utah (AP) — At least two people have died in a small plane crash in Utah south of Salt Lake City and west of Provo. The (Provo) Daily Herald reports witnesses heard an explosion near where the plane went down south of Cedar Fort near SR-73. A Utah County Sheriff's spokesman says the type of two-engine jet that crashed typically has a capacity of eight to 10 people. He doesn't know if anyone else was on board.

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — Utah Highway Patrol has determined that a report of a driver shooting at a commercial vehicle on Interstate 15 near Cedar City was false. The Spectrum reports that officers stopped the suspected vehicle at gunpoint and found an unsuspecting couple. Officers spoke to the couple and found the call was false.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — A fire in West Valley City has displaced a family and cost them their dog. KSL-TV reports that fire officials responded to the fire early Saturday after a neighbor saw flames and knocked on the door to notify the residents. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
