SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A blogger convicted for his role in an ATV protest ride through a closed Utah canyon has begun serving his five-day sentence.

KUTV in Salt Lake City says (http://bit.ly/1RWbqAf) Monte Wells reported to Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane on Friday.

Wells, who also must serve three years of probation, filed to appeal his conviction earlier this week.

Both he and San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman were convicted last year for the May 2014 ride in Recapture Canyon in the Four Corners region.

Organizers say the ride was intended to draw attention to federal overreach.

Lyman, who is also appealing his conviction, was sentenced to 10 days in prison and three years' probation.

He will serve his sentence at a later date.

The U.S. Attorney's Office declined to comment.
