FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Health officials in North Dakota say a kitten that was found in the parking lot of a high school in Fargo has tested positive for rabies.
Now, the North Dakota Department of Health and the State's Veterinarian Office are asking the public for help in locating kittens that around Nov. 18 were in or near the Fargo Davies High School parking lot.
The department says the kitten did not exhibit signs of rabies when it was originally found and would not have been contagious. However, officials say, other kittens in the same litter may have also been exposed to the virus prior to Nov. 18 and may become contagious if they develop the disease.
Rabies is a viral infection that can be transmitted through bites and saliva exposure. It causes swelling of the brain and can be fatal.
