GRETNA, La. (AP) — A former Louisiana teacher embroiled in a 2014 sex scandal involving an underage student has entered a plea of not guilty through her lawyer.

Multiple news outlets report that 33-year-old Shelley Dufresne, who taught at Destrehan High School, faces two counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Dufresne wasn't required to be in Jefferson Parish commissioner's court Wednesday. She'll be tried alongside 25-year-old Rachel Respess, who earlier pleaded not guilty to a charge of failure to report Dufresne's alleged crime.

Dufresne and Respess were arrested last year. Police say they invited the student — then 16 — to Respess' apartment for a three-way sexual encounter.

Dufresne was also charged in St. Charles Parish and has agreed to a plea deal to avoid having to register as a sex offender.
