NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — The family of an autistic 21-year-old Massachusetts man being held without bail on charges that he stabbed his mother says he should never have been charged.
Not guilty pleas to charges including armed assault to murder were entered on behalf of Zachary Holmes, of Belchertown, at his arraignment Wednesday. He's being held pending a dangerousness hearing on Jan. 27.
His mother, Joann Holmes, said her son suffered a "psychotic break," when he attacked her in September and should not face charges. She says he doesn't understand what's happening. His father says Holmes thinks he is going to get the death penalty.
His lawyer says Holmes has "communication skills similar to a 10-year-old."
Prosecutors defended the charges, saying they have a duty to do what's in the best interest of public safety.
