RENO, Nev. (AP) — A second suspect has been charged in the alleged murder of a Nevada man whose body was found in a shallow grave in the high desert 12 years after detectives believe he was stabbed to death in Golconda.
Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Allen said Tuesday 52-year-old James Melendez was arrested in Arizona Monday on suspicion of being an accessory to open murder and conspiracy to conceal or destroy evidence in the 2003 death of James Erwin.
Erwin's widow, 57-year-old Pam Erwin of Elko, was charged with open murder last week after new evidence led investigators to the grave about 165 miles northeast of Reno.
Melendez was arrested in Lake Havasu where he was being held in the Mohave County Jail. It's not clear if he has an attorney. Allen doesn't know whether he plans to fight extradition.
