PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Haitians have gathered at prayer services to mark the sixth anniversary of the country's devastating earthquake and remember those who died.
Joseph Philistin brought his two sons to a Catholic church that was one of thousands of buildings reduced to rubble on Jan. 12, 2010, when a magnitude-7.0 quake left much of Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas in ruins.
He came to mourn five relatives who were killed when their concrete home collapsed. As he joined the Tuesday service, Philistin said the "memories of that day can't ever be erased."
President Michel Martelly placed a bouquet of white flowers at a mass burial site that's been turned into an official memorial for those killed.
The government has said more than 300,000 people were killed, but the exact toll is unknown.
