BAGHDAD (AP) — The Islamic State group is claiming responsibility for a Baghdad mall attack that killed 18 people today. Attackers launched a suicide bombing attack at the entrance of a mall in the city's mainly Shiite east. Meanwhile, a U.S. defense official says American airstrikes have hit what's being called an Islamic State "cash storage facility" in the city of Mosul, which is the militants' main stronghold in Iraq.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Legal experts say it could take a year or longer to extradite recaptured Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to the U.S. The process could be delayed by legal challenges. Guzman was captured Friday after a bloody shootout. He faces drug-trafficking and organized crime charges in Mexico and is being held at the same prison he escaped from in July.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has confirmed President Barack Obama's last remaining nominee to a U.S. appeals court. Judge Luis Felipe Restrepo was forced to wait of more than 400 days because of a delay by Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, a Republican. Restrepo is now the first Hispanic federal judge from Pennsylvania on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit.
ATLANTA (AP) — Court records show FBI says agents were able use cell phone record analysis to link a Georgia woman to a string of jewelry store robberies across the South. They also checked social media postings and talked with friends who were suspicious. Abigail Lee Kemp wept in a federal courtroom in Atlanta today.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Singers Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder have joined hundreds more at the funeral of Natalie Cole. The music-filled event lasted nearly three hours at a Los Angeles church. Cole, known for hits including "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)", died of heart failure on New Year's Eve.
