ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Police say a handgun was found under a dumpster at an Annapolis elementary school.
The Capital reports (bit.ly/1S80C3d) the gun was found Wednesday morning at Georgetown East Elementary School.
Police say officers responded shortly before 7:40 a.m. after a custodian told them he found a 9mm Ruger revolver under a dumpster on the side of the building.
Police confiscated the loaded gun.
City police spokeswoman Cpl. Amy Miguez says detectives were following up on indications that it may have been stolen.
Miguez says police will also increase patrols in the area.
County school spokesman Bob Mosier says the gun was removed well before students arrived at 9:10 a.m. Mosier says the school's staff will continue to be vigilant.
A letter was sent home to parents informing them of the incident.
