DETROIT (AP) — Officials say a Detroit school is closed because too many teachers called in sick.
Students at Cass Technical High School were affected Tuesday. Steve Conn, former president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers union, tells the Detroit Free Press teachers are upset about health care cuts, the governor's efforts to overhaul education in Detroit and other issues.
Last month, similar sick-outs closed some schools in the state's largest public district.
District spokeswoman Michelle Zdrodowski tells The Detroit News in an email sick-outs send "a terrible message to the very students to whom they are supposed to serve as role models."
The district is run by a state-appointed emergency manager. Gov. Rick Snyder is proposing a pricey state bailout and reorganization that could lead to closing independent, publicly funded charter schools.
