ALTON, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is spending the first day of 2016 touring flood-damaged areas of the state. His six stops in downstate Illinois today include the Mississippi River communities of Alton and Grafton. Rauner has declared 12 Illinois counties disaster areas. Meanwhile in central Illinois, authorities continued their search for two missing teenagers last seen Monday.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli police are trying to establish the motive for a shooting attack at a popular bar in Tel Aviv. A gunman opened fire there this afternoon, killing two people and wounding at least three others before fleeing. Police don't know if the shooter was Palestinian, or if it was a gangland shooting.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says in his annual New Year's speech that he's ready for war if he's provoked by what he calls "invasive" outsiders. But he stayed away from past threats involving the country's nuclear weapons. His comments could be seen as an attempt to keep ties with rivals Washington and Seoul from getting worse so he can try to turn around a miserable economy and further solidify his leadership.
KAW CITY, Okla. (AP) — The search has resumed at a northern Oklahoma lake for a country music singer from Arkansas who disappeared while hunting nearly a week ago. The Highway Patrol has been using search dogs, boats with sonar and drag lines and a helicopter in the search for Craig Strickland. The lead singer of the Arkansas-based country-rock band Backroad Anthem disappeared during severe storms Sunday while on a duck-hunting trip with a friend, whose body was recovered from a lake on Monday. Their capsized boat was found, along with Strickland's dog, which was alive.
UNDATED (AP) — Top-ranked Clemson and No. 2 Alabama will face off in the desert for the national championship after dominating wins in the College Football Playoff semifinals yesterday. The Tigers romped in the second half for a 37-17 win over No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, followed by an even more dominating performance in which the Crimson Tide thumped Michigan State 38-0 in the Cotton Bowl.
